CONCERT REVIEW - Peter Bradley Adams
November 7th, 2008 * WFPK Performance Studio * Louisville, KY
MP3:

One of the unsung treasures of the city of Louisville is WFPK - and more specifically, the indie rock arm of the local public radio partnership's weekly music showcase, Live Lunch. For an hour every Friday, the station broadcasts an unedited, live concert from whatever local, regional, or national act has agreed. In the past few years, everyone from the Meat Puppets to the Decemberists have graced the small performance studio - and what is even more remarkable than the talent? The concerts are free for the first 50 folks that show up every week and don't mind cramming into the broadcasting area.

November 7th, former EastMountainSouth member Peter Bradley Adams brought his four-piece band and his two albums worth of solo work for a mellow but highly enjoyable showcase.

Accompanied by a back-up vocalist, slide guitarist, upright bass, and drums - and moving himself between acoustic guitar and piano, Adams spent his 60 minutes playing through the highlights of his new CD Leavetaking - as well as touching on his first solo disc, a tune from his former band, and even opening the show with his own - very appropriate - spin on the old spiritual "Poor Wayfaring Stranger."

Adams seemed comfortable - almost too much so - taking his time between songs to tune his guitar. But part of the appeal of such an intimate venue is the opportunity to hear imperfect anecdotes. Adams explained how his infatuation with the Beatles Let It Be album informed the chorus on "One Foot Down," and how his love/hate relationship with his former city of residence fed into the creation of his track "Los Angeles."
