A Look At What Is New In Music - WEEK OF 11.11.08

Longwave - Secrets Are Sinister
MP3: Longwave - Sirens of the Sea
MP3: Longwave - Shining Hours
Longwave’s fourth LP, Secrets are Sinister – their first since departing from RCA Records - rocks and sways with an energy that toes the line between raucous and reservation.
With production on Secrets being handled by Interpol’s Peter Katis, the comparison to that band’s new wave sound is inevitable. And while Longwave isn’t afraid of building up a wall of layered sounds, they never come close to sounding like wanna-be Brits or imitators.
The vocals of Steve Schiltz are clean and pure – there is no posturing or sense of dramatics present in bands like The Killers, The Bravery, or the aforementioned Interpol. Schiltz’s voice rings with a clarity that seems like it would sound the same even if he was singing nursery rhymes. Longwave is also successful in building a sense of momentum from song to song, creating a spacey ebb-and-flow, heavy with guitar noise and atmosphere, throughout the entire album. In less than 40 minutes the entire record is finished, shimmering to an end with the excellent “Shining Hours” and the title track.
