Despite the constant clamor of the media about the state of the economy (and the state of the recording industry, for that matter), things are good for fans of sensitive-guy indie rock! Two mainstays of that subjective sub-genre have dropped new records in the past few weeks - and both are handing them out (or, more accurately, they are letting you download them for free).

MATT POND PA - THE FREEEP
Download HERE.
Matt Pond PA has been putting out orchestral pop for years - and they just keep getting better. "The FREEEP" (AKA "The Free E.P.", get it?) is almost a full-length with 9 tracks - though, three (three of the best, actually) are instrumental pieces. It bobs and flows with typical MPPA texture and charm that seems like it should be required to play on loudspeakers on particularly nice fall days.

Jay Bennett - Whatever Happened I Apologize
Download HERE.
Jay Bennett was part of Wilco while Wilco were busy becoming counter-cultural icons. From Being There to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Bennett was alongside Tweedy and the rest of the band. Since then he has been making quiet acoustic albums on his own. Whatever Happened is raw and uneven, but it serves as the ultimate example of how technology has changed music as an industry. From Jay's basement to you - now decide if you really like authentic, non-record label music for yourself...

Awesome, particularly on the Jay Bennet thing. I've been wondering what Jay's been up to for a while.
His melody work on YHF was pretty freakin' amazing. As much as I think Tweedy's a genius, Jay added a crapload in the melody department....
Thanks for hte link.
NICE! Another Freebie!
