A Look At What Is New In Music
MP3s:
There has been so much mediocrity put out under the guise of “alt-rock” and “modern rock” over the past decade that it has become easy to forget what GOOD modern rock sounds like.
Need a reminder? Check out Dusk, the latest from Nebraska rockers ladyfinger (ne).
Saddle Creek - the band’s record label - is also the home of indie-rock hero Bright Eyes, so ladyfinger (ne)’s brand of mid-90s fuzz-grunge is that much more surprising. There is no weepy acoustic guitar balladry here – Dusk buckles down with the first note of album opener “Over and Over” and refuses to let up on the intensity for a full 40-minutes.
The sound isn’t new, but the product is quality. Ladyfinger (ne) manage the grit of the Foo Fighters with the muddy backwards-glance riffing of Queens of the Stone Age. And singer/guitarist Chris Machmuller trademarks the band with his thick and desperate vocal delivery, so genuine that he is even able to sell lyrical pleas about a behavioral disorder (“You’re just a kid! Go play in the dirt!” from "A.D.D.")
