CAPSULE MOVIE REVIEWS
Quick thoughts on a couple of recent films:
1) Adventureland
I always feeli like I can't offer a REAL opinion on a period piece when I wasn't a part of the original period. Since I wasn't a college grad in 1987, it is hard to give much insight on the accuracy of a film that relies so heavily on nostalgia (from soundtrack to sets). But judged purely as a film examining the awkward task of growing up, Adventureland has it's moments. One of the major credits to this film? The fact that the casting director actually casted folks in their early twenties. Nothing is worse than watching a bunch of 35-year-olds act like they are conflicted 22-year-olds.
2) Gigantic
It can only be assumed that this mediocre indie drama was made years ago and shelved as subpar - then ressurected and sent straight to DVD when Zooey Deschanel hit the hype goldmine with 500 Days of Summer. Zooey is her usual typecast - sexy, offbeat indie-rock dream girl full of dysfunction. John Goodman and Ed Asner are genuinely funny. But the subplot involving a Chinese baby is just weird most of the time.
3) I Love You, Man
In an alternate universe, I am best friends with Paul Rudd and Jason Segal and used to date Rashida Jones (it ended on good terms). Thus, I really like this movie. But judged without bias, the plot is thin, the action slow, and the dialogue only so-so. But high marks for the whole "Slappin' da bahss!" scene...
